FIVE INSOMNIA CURES THAT WON'T COST A CENT!

Insomnia cures can range from simple relaxation techniques, through to strong medication. The right insomnia cures for you may not work for someone else, but if you're having trouble sleeping, it's worth starting with tried-and-true insomnia cures that are easy and affordable.

Most people have trouble sleeping at some stage in their life. Often insomnia is brought about after a period of stress or a lifestyle change. The following five insomnia cures can be tried one at a time, or you may like to use all of the insomnia cures together. They're all virtually free, can be done without any equipment, and may eliminate your insomnia and allow you to once again fall asleep quickly and enjoy a good night's sleep.

Insomnia Cures Number One: Relaxation techniques

Worrying about getting to sleep can set up a vicious cycle - you go to bed feeling anxious, you lie awake and become more anxious and sleep seems to be the last thing you're able to do. Before you try other insomnia cures, remember that the first step toward falling asleep is to relax your body and your mind. A good relaxation technique is to tense each part of your body, beginning with your toes, and then allowing it to fully relax before tensing the calves, thighs, hands, and so on. It may seem a little strange at first, but after a bit of practice, this technique will help you to relax quickly and effortlessly.

Insomnia Cures Number Two:  Warm milk

It might sound like a cliché, but warmed milk is one of the most trusted insomnia cures. Why? Warm milk contains the enzyme tryptophan. Studies of tryptophan have shown that it has a positive effect on our ability to fall asleep. Combined with the fact that drinking warm milk is a relaxing activity, this insomnia cure could be enough to help you drift off a little easier.

Insomnia cures Number Three:  Avoid stimulants before bed

Sometimes the best insomnia cures are the most obvious! If you're lying awake in bed night after night, be sure that you have eliminated any stimulating food, drink, or activity before bed. Try not to drink any caffeinated drinks, eat spicy foods, or watch any movies that may keep your mind active before bedtime.

Insomnia Cures Number Four:  Mental tasks

A common reason for lying awake in bed is because the mind is mulling over worries or thinking about tomorrow's tasks. By giving yourself a mental task, you can actually allow your mind to rest. Next time you're lying awake thinking about how to get through the latest worry in your life, try this technique:  Starting with the letter ‘A', try and think of  someone you know whose name begins with that letter, move on to ‘B', and so on. You could also try naming other alphabetic lists, such as vegetables, car models, animals, etc. You'll be surprised how quickly you begin to feel relaxed because your worries are no longer dominating your thoughts and making you feel tense.

Insomnia Cures Number Five:  Read a book before bed

The act of reading a book works to relax you in two ways. Firstly, your mind is so occupied with what's going on in the book that you're less likely to be worrying about other issues that may make you tense before bedtime. Secondly, many people find that reading a book in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere is so relaxing that they become quite tired. Just make sure you're not reading something that is too stimulating!
